100 SafeCare Hospitals®
100 SafeCare Hospitals® recognizes hospitals that demonstrate exceptional performance across a comprehensive, evidence-based framework of healthcare quality, safety, timeliness, outcomes, and value. Recognizing Healthcare Excellence® through data-driven, evidence-based measurement of hospital performance.
Since 2013, The SafeCare Group® has evaluated U.S. hospitals using its Recognizing Healthcare Excellence® methodology—a balanced scorecard designed to provide a broader view of hospital performance than rankings based on a single measure or specialty. The program currently uses generative AI to analyze data and produce quarterly ratings and rankings for approximately 5,000 accredited hospitals, including Veterans Affairs and military hospitals.
Recognizing the Top 1% of U.S. Hospitals
The 100 SafeCare Hospitals® distinction represents the highest-performing hospitals identified through the SafeCare methodology. The program's current top 50 hospitals represent approximately the top 1% of hospitals in the United States, making recognition as a 100 SafeCare Hospital a highly selective distinction.
A More Complete Picture of Hospital Performance
Unlike rankings that focus primarily on reputation, specialty programs, or subjective assessments, 100 SafeCare Hospitals® emphasizes measurable hospital performance using time-tested, evidence-based metrics. Many of these measures also align with areas that influence CMS quality and value-based programs, including hospital-acquired conditions, readmissions, and value-based purchasing.
100 SafeCare Hospitals® is designed to help patients, healthcare professionals, hospital leaders, and policymakers recognize hospitals that excel across multiple dimensions of care—not simply one aspect of healthcare performance.
Recognizing Healthcare Excellence®
The SafeCare methodology evaluates hospital performance across five critical dimensions:
- Hospital Charges — Measures risk-standardized payments and the cost of care across key conditions and procedures.
- Wait Times — Evaluates timeliness of emergency and hospital care, including key measures of access and treatment.
- Medical Errors — Measures serious, potentially preventable complications and mortality associated with hospital care.
- Unexpected Readmissions — Evaluates 30-day readmissions and unplanned hospital visits across major conditions and procedures.
- Hospital-Acquired Infections — Measures hospital-specific rates for infections such as CLABSI, CAUTI, surgical-site infections, MRSA, and C. difficile.
